Free Apps: FirstClass comes with or has available many free apps. One of my favorites is FirstClass Mass Mailer. It is the equivalent, in my mind, of many paid bulk mail services, and allows for the easy mailing to lists of subscribers and FirstClass User Groups. Learn more, and get it, here: http://www.firstclass.com/~werner_de_jong/

Punchthrough Calendars: I'm not fond of the term "punchthrough calendars" because I'm not sure it means anything unless you already know what it means, but FirstClass has this really nifty feature that lets you overlay one calendar on top of another, so that you can look at the contents of more than one calendar at once.
At Kannon, we have a Kannon Staff calendar, and a calendar for each of our conference rooms. I have "punched-through" each of these to my own calendar, so I can see all the events at a glance.
It's wicked easy: select the calendar to be overlaid, hold down the shift key, then dragndrop onto the bottom layer calendar. Once there, look at the Calendars tab in your calendar and you'll see all the punched-through calendars in the list. Use the checkbox to show/hide the different calendars, and right-click on each calendar to choose your display color preference.
And, before you ask, these punched-through calendars will sych to your smartphone.
Nice.

FirstClass has many features, but Conferences are what really sets it apart from the competition. Somewhat similar to a "bulletin board," a Conference has granular permissions and can be used for many different things: a convenient place for group conversation and collaboration, a file repository, you name it. But, my favorite use for conferences is as the home of your institutional memory.

Many people say to me that "mail lists" or "groups" are important ways to contact everyone. But, let's say that today the boss sends a message to everyone that is of critical importance. For anyone like me that gets over 100 emails a day, that message gets lost in my mailbox. Then, there is the question of the person who gets hired next Tuesday. Who sends her a copy of that critical message, and the last 50?

Posted to FirstClass Conferences (or Open Text Social Workplace Communities), these messages would appear in a place where they can't be missed, and will be availabe to the new hire, and everyone else in the organization.
FirstClass Conferences can be the repository of your institutional memory.
